Interview: Reid Stewart
Where did the idea or concept for the “Earth Distortion” come from?
“Earth Distortion” references the idea that time and space are subjective. A photo of the earth is already distorted given its scale (earth could not fit on a tee shirt), and its inability to depict the planet in its entirety. I have wanted to reference the inherent nature of distortion. This particular image has gone through many stages of reproduction including; satellite telescope, film negative, print and mass reproduced offset print. It has also been sun faded, scanned/digitized, printed
and rescanned. I have begun to feel that the image of the earth that is printed on this shirt, consciously warped, may still be as accurate as its more spherical source photograph.

What do you like about seeing this image on a tee shirt?
In this case, it is a shirt I would wear. I usually think about that when I am considering which work to submit because a lot of my work would not be successful as a shirt.

Have you ever shown this image in a gallery show or in your video work?
It hasn’t been shown yet. I have been considering what form it should take. I really like this as an image, but I want it to be presented in such a way that the viewer can see he is distorting the earth. I think it will be an interactive piece presented on a monitor using a sensor. As the viewer approaches it, the image will become distorted. Maybe I would create an animated, warping distort.
