Broken Social Scene (BSS) was started in 1999 by Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning. Reflecting Drew and Canning’s partnership, the group was a mix of cagey vets and wide-eyed “kids”. In the beginning, BSS was a side project, an escape, an experiment. For one year, it was whoever showed up, playing whatever was written the day before. They released their debut album, Feel Good Lost, in 2001. After a year of gigging around town with the fairly solid line-up of Drew, Canning, Peroff, Andrew Whiteman, Spearin, John Crossingham, as well as vital support from Feist, Cranley, and Metric’s Emily Haines and James Shaw, the band recorded a new album, You Forgot It In People, released in October 2002 to great local praise. They spent 2003-04 touring continuously with a changing line-up, and have recently released their eponymous third record, as well as worked on various film soundtracks.
