One of our favourite Canadian retailers, Three Monkeys has put together an amazing in-store Art Exhibit set to open Friday June 1st from 6pm-10pm. The show will then run through the whole month to July 1st.

The show will feature an amazing selection of talented individuals from Montreal and Vancouver, brought together by Peter Ricq, who has spent time living in both cities and has collaborated with us at Three Monkeys on several events in the past. Representing for us here on the East Coast we have Kevin Ledo, Evan Melnyk, Donald Caron, Fronc Ng and Yohan Trudel… representing the West Coast we have Ben Tour, Peter Taylor, Andrew Young, Kristian Adam and Caroline Weaver.

Our great friends and Lifetime Collective artists Niall McClelland and Jeremy Jansen will be showing their work at New York City’s Envoy Enterprises project cube. The show will be running from May 17th through to June 17th.

When ten human beings cram their bodies and belongings into a van and embark on a weeklong journey into the desert, you can be sure the trip will represent something slightly different for everyone: adventure, relaxation, or even a romance produced by lack-of-sleep.

But at least they can all agree on one thing: that Lifetime shoots will inevitably go as unplanned and strangers will soon become family.

Mixing poetry and music, this film tells the story of four kids whose desire to escape the daily grind results in a weeklong voyage into the red sands of Arizona.

Tired of work, with big dreams of play, our group is overcome by the longing for a new place to roam, jump, dance and camp out. This is Salazar’s vision of bliss, a portrait of the road and a love letter to the crazy adventures that Lifetime can’t help but attract.

The story is split in 2. Where Part 1 mirrors the home movie, full of climactic moments and candid gems, Part 2 explores the land and all the escapist madness it generated.

“We drove endless hours falling in and out of sleep. I’d close my eyes in a forest and wake up in a red sand desert. The constant rumble of the tires on the road created a vibration that followed us everywhere.”

Welcome to our featured blog post dedicated to the Free Thinkers zine. Here we will shine a light on the interviews, artwork, photography and writing from folks we’ve featured in the current zine.

Free Thinkers is a free bi-annual publication that is available at all of our retailers worldwide. It gives us the chance to feature interesting and exciting things happening within Lifetime but also from people and places from all over the world. It features interviews, artwork, photographs, travel logs, ramblings, stories and articles by Lifetime and our friends in the Collective.

This week we want to kick it off with an interview our Collective artist Jay Howell did with his San Francisco buddies Thee Oh Sees. The interview also features photographs from San Francisco photographer and Hamburger Eyes founder Ray Potes. All in all an amazing little project I’d say.

This interview took place early December of 2011 at the Verdi Club in San Francisco. The band as per usual was on a big North American tour in support of their new album entitled “Carrion Crawler/The Dream”. Jay spoke with the bands guitarist Petey Dammit on life, crime and their music. Hope you enjoy!

A two night exhibition/exposition featuring five artists, Hannah Ireland, Joseph Rosenzweig, Benjamin Vilmain and (in collaboration) Hunter Longe+James Cordas, plus an essay/text by Brandon Drew Holmes.

An Expo is a meeting place in a host space, a neutral territory (which is never neutral). Liminal Space is a large venue with definite characteristics both architectural and pertaining to its usage. It provides a heightened specificity of context within which the artists’ four installations will differently situate themselves.

Curated by Jackie Im and Aaron Harbour, who have as part of their Feed Forward residency set up ET AL., a library/office base of operations. The library is accessible; the books are all available for check-out, and the curators are available for consultations and reading/lending until April 30th.

Recently the Jacuzzi Boys headed out on a European Tour. James McGarragle caught up with them in Glasgow and shot a 14 minute video, “I asked them some questions, brought them some drinks, watched them play and then we all danced to Morrissey.”

We want to wish our good friend Carl White all the best with his upcoming show, Pentimento. This show is Carl’s biggest and after looking at the works, his best. We’ve been working with Carl since Lifetime’s inception nearly 10 years ago. He is still with us today and has been a huge source of inspiration for everyone here at Lifetime.

Lifetime Collective Artist and good friend Ben Frey is having a his first solo exhibition in Berlin and we’re getting behind it! “Pure Luck” opens this Friday, April 6th at Okazi Gallery and features illustrated stories based on traditional Russian prison tattoos and their connection with the Rolling Stone’s song Sympathy For The Devil. It’s an idea that could only come from this man. Have a read below for more info on the show, and be sure to pass this along to your friends and family in Berlin!

In Fall 2011, Frey stumbled upon a book about criminal tattoos done in Russian prisons recently published by FUEL. The tattoos were from different periods, some of prisoners of war during WWII, but many were of murderers, thieves, and even just people suspected of being a threat to Russia’s mafia and political elite. Frey drove to create a series using stories from the tattoo illustrations that could also be depicted in The Rolling Stone’s song, Sympathy For The Devil (Sympathy was inspired by Mikhail Bulgakov’s The Master and Margarita; a novel written about the devil’s visit to the Soviet Union). Some images use themes of repression (as they were designed for prisoners) but there were many tattoos done with irony; invoking a sentiment of prosperity. Frey drew mostly from this and will present these drawings in his first exhibition in Berlin, PURE LUCK at Okazi Gallery in April 2012.

Ben Frey is an illustrator and fine artist located in-between the mountains and ocean in Vancouver, Canada. He graduated from Capilano University’s Design and Illustration program in 2007, and has spent the past few years freelancing in Vancouver and in Berlin. Ben is notably an art contributor to Lifetime, Sitka Surfboards, Westbeach, Momentum Wheel Co as well as a children’s book illustrator for Alanna Books UK, Annick Press, and Simply Read Books. His biggest source of inspiration is the west coast, old illustrated biology textbooks of plants and animals, and India.

From Billboard to NME, the blogosphere’s been a buzz this week after the LA Weekly broke the news that Lifetime Collective friend and genuine bad ass Hanni El Khatib will record his sophomore record at The Black Keys studio in Nashville and produced by Dan Auerbach. Before venturing into the studio or European Summer Festivals (Primavera, Dour, Eurockeennes, etc), Hanni will embark on a 33 City Tour in US & Canada that officially kicks off in LA today (Friday April 6).

The tour featuring Hanni, The Tijuana Panthers, and Hard Drugs lands in Vancouver Beautiful British Columbia next Wednesday April 11th @ The Biltmore and we’re supporting it! Here’s your chance to see what all the fuss is about. More HERE.

This past Friday we brought together LA based Lifetime Collective friends and family at HVW8 Gallery in Hollywood for a one night only event celebrating the release of our Free Thinkers Zine Issue #2! Fortunately we have amazing pictures and video of the night incase you missed out. Have a look below!

The festivities kicked off with a print and photo show of select works form the zine followed by a live performance by The Mattson 2 and DJ set by KCRW’s Jeremy Sole. The night was truly amazing with Lifetime Collective Artists and Free Thinker Zine contributors bringing the experience to life. People from all over the city came together to make the night one for the books.

Congratulate our good friend and fine artist Erin McSavaney on his painting show that opens tomorrow night, Saturday March 10th, 2012 at the Equinox Gallery in Vancouver, BC!

The inspiration for Erin’s latest series comes from family trips along Highway 101 on BC’s Sunshine Coast. Paintings based on snapshots taken from the moving car evoke speed and detail at the same time, and juxtapose the natural BC landscape with stylized architectural forms. Absolutely amazing…

The weather is still on the wet side of things in Vancouver and you need to get out more. Ben Tour has his latest collection of work and a painted installation showing at Catalog Gallery this month. If you live in Vancouver or plan on visiting, grab a friend and head to the show at 56 Powell Street, Unit 100.

The Lifetime Collective FREE THINKERS ZINE ISSUE #2 is now available for your viewing pleasure!

Created as a home for interviews, artwork, photographs, travel logs, ramblings, stories and articles on Lifetime and the world via our friends in the Collective. It will provide a place where we can communicate to you (the reader) our ideas, thoughts, dreams and wishes.

This second issue touches on an overarching theme of “The creative process,” and what that might mean to us all. In the following pages you’ll find a some conversations, stories and photographs with Thee Oh Sees, the scene of Topanga California in the 70’s, The Mattson 2, Featured artists/designers Niall McClelland and Ryan Rhodes. This issue also looks at the artwork of Hunter Longe, a selection of zones from Brass Tracks Publishing, Cameron’s Books in Portland, our friends at Collage Collage in Vancouver, BC and a photo essay with Michael Jager.

When ten human beings cram their bodies and belongings into a van and embark on a weeklong journey into the desert, you can be sure the trip will represent something slightly different for everyone: adventure, relaxation, or even a romance produced by lack-of-sleep.

But at least they can all agree on one thing: that Lifetime shoots will inevitably go as unplanned and strangers will soon become family.

Mixing poetry and music, this film tells the story of four kids whose desire to escape the daily grind results in a weeklong voyage into the red sands of Arizona.

Tired of work, with big dreams of play, our group is overcome by the longing for a new place to roam, jump, dance and camp out. This is Salazar’s vision of bliss, a portrait of the road and a love letter to the crazy adventures that Lifetime can’t help but attract.

The story is split in 2. Where Part 1 mirrors the home movie, full of climactic moments and candid gems, Part 2 explores the land and all the escapist madness it generated.

“We drove endless hours falling in and out of sleep. I’d close my eyes in a forest and wake up in a red sand desert. The constant rumble of the tires on the road created a vibration that followed us everywhere.”
