Robin Laananen x Broken Social Scene
Wednesday, November 26, 2008 by lifetime

October was full of change, from the fiery leaves falling from the branches to who would take residence in the White House. Broken Social Scene took it upon themselves while touring the U.S.'s Midwest and East Coast to remind their fans the necessity of showing at the polls. We spent 3 dates in the swing state of Missouri, the highpoint being in St. Louis the same day as now President Elect Obama. He spoke to thousands under the picturesque arch, including our entourage.

The 3-week tour spread over the Midwest, parts of the South and included an appearance in New York's CMJ, selling out the Masonic Temple in Brooklyn. Clubs and unusual venues alike, the crowds never left disappointed after an intimate evening with Broken Social Scene spanning between 2 and 3 hours. The obvious closeness and chemistry of the band engaged everyone to feel included, with a different set list and extra, local horn players every night. Fellow Canadians, Land of Talk, opened the show and easily grew their fan base. Singer Elizabeth Powell did nightly double duty, singing with BSS, she complimented Kevin and Brendan's vocals amazingly.

The tour came to the perfect ending on Halloween in Montreal. I returned to Los Angeles exhausted and anxious to vote. Its nice to know that our Northern neighbors not only care about our potential demise but also can express it so sweetly.

A success all around.
