After having spent the better part of 2 months in Berlin, Les has come back to Vancouver to show his work at BLIM.
The current work I am showing at Blim reflects the captivating aesthetic and formal qualities of common vices we may see around us daily, for example coffee, booze, and smokes. Whether one gives in to these vices or not, the attractive caliber of the icons of these vices retain an asphyxiating compromise when associating vanity with surrender.
Color, texture, and composition are the most fundamental concerns in which I undertake when constructing a painting or sculpture. For me, the excitement of the formal qualities of discarded materials and my manipulation of paint and 3 dimensional forms are what activate my pieces. My compositions have acquired a motif reminiscent to that of flags from around the globe. This reference to Nationhood yields the ability to bring up questions about how arbitrary and fractal nations and human beings may be perceived. My works then have the chance to behave with an adventitious and precarious manner, which enables them to be considered local and or global.
The actual engagement of collecting discarded materials from home renovation sites and back alley ways has become a fascinating introduction to my collage process. When I collect scraps for my picture making, I am engaging myself within the realms of hunting, chance, and the intimate formal qualities of left over building materials primarily within city districts
