I focus on customs that are about to disappear. I live with people who continue to milk cows by hand; who plant, harvest, and preserve their own food. I, too, engage in these practices. In this way, I experience history, as it slowly becomes just that: HISTORY. Seeing the past before it vanishes prolongs the present and makes it more profound. Working in sixteen-millimeter film is a way of holding onto the beauty and delicacy of a format and a practice that are becoming obsolete. Like hand sowing a field or knitting a sweater, this is not the easiest or most practical way of working. It is often simpler and more practical to have large, industrial farms, to purchase already manufactured clothing and to shoot and edit on modern, electronic media. Yet the food, clothing and film produced in this manner has another layer of significance, a value added due to the limitations, difficulties, intention and emotion implied in their production. –Naomi Uman More info here: www.cinemaproject.org http://www.lifetimecollective.com/xnews.php?newsid=237Bishop Morocco Disco GuitarsWed, 24 Mar 2010 21:00:00 -0700 Toronto based duo Bishop Morocco has released a new track entitled Disco Guitars. This track is perfectly clever, captivating, and haunting all at once. It is an extension of their undeniable sound that takes a cue from the emergence of 1980's post punk senisiblity with melodic gloom and doom at it's finest. The video was directed by the ever talented Eva Michon, remember her name, it is one that you are bound to hear about in the near future. Hope you enjoy!   My first attempt at getting a hold of Jason Collett:   “Sorry man, I’m a little behind schedule…do you mind if you call back in an hour?”   “Sure bud, no worries.”   My second attempt at getting a hold of Jason Collett:   “Ok almost there, can you call me back in exactly 10 minutes?”   “Do you want me to give you another hour?  That’s totally ok…”   “Na…it’s cool, 10 minutes should do just fine…”   On the second try I could clearly tell that the man was out of breath and if he wasn’t running yet he was thinking about it.  The third time was the charm.  When Jason finally had the chance to sit still and chat, there was a lot of rustling and discussion happening in the back ground.  “Busy day?” I ask with a laugh. “Well, we’re all in the van and this is the only time that everyone could get their interviews done.”   This is proper penance for these musicians, who spent a lot of last year holed up in the self-described “Man-Den” that is Ill Eagle studio in East Toronto.  “No one’s actually sure what’s on the floor,” Collett laughs.  But it’s not only Rat A Tat Tat that got polished off there-Jason’s travelling band, Zeus (Carlin Nicholson, Mike O’Brien, Neil Quin, and Rob Drake) put out Say Us in late February to critical acclaim.  Jason’s no stranger to being a piece of something big.  Whether it’s as an auxiliary member of Broken Social Scene or as the concierge of Toronto’s annual collaborative Basement Revue at the Dakota Tavern, he just wants to see the musical community grow and prosper. It’s kind of like how the Lifetime Collective works. “We get a lot of stuff from you guys.  We’re well taken care of.  It’s like in a community of musicians - you’re allowed to stretch out a little more and you really get inspired by others around you.  [With Zeus] I just recognize it for what it is.  I mean I’ve been playing with some of these guys since high school.  I’ve never had a feeling like this with a band before.  The dynamic has gotten to the point where, musically, we finish each other sentences.”   When asked if the recording and touring relationship with Zeus will continue, he sounds confident. “It’s unspoken.  I’m always gonna be involved with them and it doesn’t have to be laid down in a plan.”   Playing with his friends is obviously a lot of fun for Jason, so I ask him if he ever has to be the one to “reign it in” on stage.  He laughs “There is a lot of craziness on stage, but the good news is that I can go backstage and take a pee and know that they’ll keep playing!”   This is good news for a band leader that’s booked solid until the summer.  The dates include a stop off at SXSW, a sprawling tour through the Canadian and American Midwest, and some locations that Collett has never played before. ‘I’m very excited to play Mexico City. My only regret on this tour is that we can’t play in the country longer. I can’t believe we’re playing there.’     Jason’s calling the tour the Bonfire Ball Revue, which includes Zeus and Bahamas (Jason’s former bandmate Afie Jurvanen’s solo project) playing the opening sets.   I ask Jason if this new, incestuous family is going to grow into Broken Social Scene proportions. “We just take it as comes.  Music is like a gene, these things always evolve.” The Bonfire Ball Tour Dates w/ Zeus & Bahamas Tuesday March 23rd, 2010 San Francisco, CA Cafe Du Nord Thursday March 25th, 2010 Seattle, WA Tractor Tavern Friday March 26th, 2010 Vancouver, BC Biltmore Cabaret Saturday March 27th, 2010 Victoria, BC Sugar Sunday March 28th, 2010 Kelowna, BC Habitat Monday March 29th, 2010 Canmore, AB Communitea Café Wednesday March 31st, 2010 Edmonton, AB Pawn Shop Thursday April 1st, 2010 Calgary, AB Legion Friday April 2nd, 2010 Regina, SK The Exchange Saturday April 3rd, 2010 Winnipeg, MB West End Cultural Centre Sunday April 4th, 2010 Minneapolis, MN 7th Street Entry Tuesday April 6th, 2010 Madison, WI Majestic Theatre Wednesday April 7th, 2010 Chicago, IL Schubas Tavern Monday April 12th, 2010 Hamilton, ON The Casbah Tuesday April 13th, 2010 Waterloo, ON Starlight Room Wednesday April 14th, 2010 Ottawa, ON Zaphod Beeblebrox Thursday April 15th, 2010 Montreal, QC Le Petit Campus Friday April 16th, 2010 Peterborough, ON The Red Dog Tavern Saturday April 17th, 2010 Kingston, ON The Grad Club Tuesday April 20th, 2010 Philadelphia, PA The World Cafe Wednesday April 21st, 2010 Northampton, MA Iron Horse Music Hall Friday April 23rd, 2010 New York, NY The Mercury Lounge Saturday April 24th, 2010 Brooklyn, NY Union Hall     www.jasoncollettmusic.com www.themusicofzeus.com www,myspace.com/bahamasbreeze                  http://www.lifetimecollective.com/xnews.php?newsid=233Robyn Love: Artists' TalkSat, 20 Mar 2010 21:00:00 -0700 Robyn Love is an amazing textile based installation artist who has initiated some pretty wonderful community-based projects all over the place.
